However, a group of beings knownthe Monascheiwans came to Earth to take the fifth element to utilize it for their own well-being, promising to return it in time for the next cycle. In the distant future of the 2200's, the Earth is a very different place, yet much the same… People smoke, break laws, make messes. In the megalopolis of New York, a former elite commando named Korban Dallas is now a taxi driver. As the Monascheiwans were returning the Fifth Element to Earth to fend of the rising evil, they are destroyed by a ruthless race of beings knownMangalores. Discovered in the remains of the Monascheiwans' ship, is a remnant of the Fifth Element, from which they re-create "the perfect being", The Fifth Element, named "Leeloo", who drops in on Korban Dallas in his cab… literally. Dallas keeps her free from government control and brings her to a priest named Vito Cornillius, who, seeing the coming Evil in the prophecies, is attempting to find the Elemental Stones needed to power the Fifth Element. He is getting in the way of a ruthless businessman named Zorg, who is already operating under the sway of Evil.
In the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.
Imaginative, colorful, and entertaining. The plot was weak where the "Evil/Shadow" and the bad guys were concerned, but the movie contained enough new ideas to keep it fun. If you are a fan of the sci-fi genre, there is a lot to like in the film. As a sci-fi buff, I really enjoyed the imaginative scenery (luxury liners in space). It is always interesting to see how writers and directors view life in the future. The pace was fast and the action relatively believable. Bruce Willis' Korbin Dallas character was entertaining, and could anchor a series of similar films. Milla Jovovich was definitely eyecatching, and Chris Tucker was absolutely hilariousRuby Rhod. One thing that I enjoy about futuristic sci-fi movies is that the future is going to be anything but boring. Good job Mr. Besson, keep up the good work.

He is devilishly craftythe servant of the Great Evil. Ian Holm is religiously mysteriousFather Vito Cornelius and Milla Jovovich is excitingly sexyLeeloo. All in all, with the great spectrum of colorful characters, weapons and special effects, writer, director Luc Besson blends drama, tragedy and comedy to create a superior film which evolves quietly into a classic. ****
Besson may have misfired with The Fifth Element, but at least he does it with flair and a sense of humor.
The film, for me, was something far more intimate, centered on this fifth element, which represents life, love and art. A sort of model, a reflection or mirror, a way of exploring how to live better with others and with oneself. In peace.
